How to Write for YCteen
horizontal rule

Do you have a story to tell?

We are looking for students who want to tell their personal stories in ways that will engage and support their peers.

We invite you to apply for our fall writing internship, which begins in October. This internship will be conducted online

YCteen writers are mentored by full-time professional editors, learning memoir writing and journalism skills. Our writers get to be a voice for other teens; their work is published for thousands of readers on and is often reprinted by sites like Chalkbeat, or in Youth Communication curricula. Writers will have an opportunity to interact with each other through activities such as movie screening(s), group discussions of current events, writing lessons, and meetings with guest speakers. The writing process is rigorous, involving many drafts, but with lots of support and guidance from an editor. Writers will be paid $100 per published article.

Our Requirements:

• Writers must be in high school and between the ages of 15 and 20
• Writers must commit to working with us online a minimum of two days a week, two hours a day (for a total of at least 4 hours per week), anytime between the hours of 1pm and 6pm to be arranged between you and your editor.
• Writers must commit to participating for a minimum of three months.

Applications are due by Wednesday, September 23, 2020. Those selected for an interview will be notified by September 28, and internships will start the week of October 5.

We will provide laptops to participants who do not have them.
