Teacher Lesson Return to "Deaf but Not Dumb"
Deaf but Not Dumb
horizontal rule
Oni Nicolarakis describes her decision to transfer from a school for deaf people into a mainstream situation with hearing students.

Ask your students to think about the problems Oni might face and why she wanted to challenge herself this way. Ask them to discuss big transitions they’ve made: moving to another country or neighborhood, starting a job, dealing with a family break-up or a relationship ending. Does Oni’s story remind them of their own emotions at the time? If not how were their situations different?
