POETRY: A Broken Christmas
Nakia Vassell, 19
Bronx, NY

Everyone is giving cheer
CHRISTMAS IS NEAR
CHRISTMAS IS NEAR
I’m still buried in my fears
Asking Santa why I’m still here
Who wished for me to be broken
Do you know God or do you believe in him?
Did you give Mary the gift to bear his son?
Is he really a good dude?
I need to hear this one.

I want to know why ungrateful people receive gifts to make them smile
When there’s someone out there struggling to prepare a canned meal for their innocent child
Santa if I robbed a man blind
Would you tell Jesus to stop being on my side?
I know it sounds crazy to think of you two
Cause you’re man-made
And well...maybe he is too
Maybe the hell we are promised for our sins
Is the world we currently live in.

Santa I don’t need anything for Christmas
I’d rather give that homeless boy all my wishes
He needs someone to believe in
Someone like you
I grew up early
Knowing you weren’t true
I grew up receiving gifts from parents and people in suits
Not the ones who try to portray who you are
The ones with the money sipping lovely
While plenty of people freeze and starve

Everyone is giving cheer
CHRISTMAS IS NEAR
CHRISTMAS IS NEAR
